Get-a-Gig: Vodacom to create 1 million jobs in South Africa

Vodacom South Africa launched the Get-a-Gig project today and through the NXT LVL platform, with a three-year goal of linking one million youth to employment or gigs by 2024.

South Africa does have one of the world’s highest rates of young unemployment. To offer young people a fighting opportunity in this difficult economy. According to Vodacom, youth unemployment remains at a frightening 65.5 percent.

The most recent employment figures from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) illustrate the country’s dismal economic situation.

According to the data, unemployment increased from 34.9 percent in the first quarter of 2022 to 35.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021. It is by far the highest level since the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) began in 2008.

With these startling numbers, and as part of Vodacom’s ongoing commitment to empowering South African youth, Get A Gig pairs a job seeker (youth) with employment or gig opportunities inside Vodacom and its partners, allowing them to Grow, Learn, and Earn.

Get-A-Gig was introduced as an extension of Vodacom’s recently revamped NXT LVL (declared next level), a platform aimed at overcoming the issues faced by young people by providing them with opportunities to connect, learn, and earn while also providing them with access to the tools they need to reach their full potential.

So according to Vodacom, NXT LVL also allows young people to navigate their careers into adulthood, especially at a time when unemployment is at an all-time high. The main aim is to carry the younger generation along with the trend in new innovations in the mobile and internet world.

“The launch of Get-A-Gig is just another strategy for Vodacom to combat the increasing young unemployment rate,” says Jorge Mendes, Vodacom’s Chief Head of Consumer Business.

Get-A-Gig is accessible to all NXT LVL subscribers for free via the My Vodacom App and VodaPay.

New NXT LVL users must first download the My Vodacom or VodaPay App, then register for NXT LVL, then click on the Get A Gig tile to register and build a profile, and then search and register for available Gigs in their region.

Existing NXT LVL users can sign up for Get-A-Gig by login into the My Vodacom App or the VodaPay super app, clicking on the Get-A-Gig tile to signup and build an identity, and then searching for and applying for open Gigs in their region.
